The responsibility of a substitute teacher or paraprofessional is to provide continuity to the educational program during the absence of the regular classroom staff member. On occasion we will hire substitutes in other areas such as School Nutrition, Transportation, Maintenance, Clerical, or other areas. The successful substitute must sincerely like children and be patient, creative, and determined.

Completion of our requirements does not guarantee being approved as a substitute.  Those of competent and good moral character, holding a teaching license or with experience in teaching will be given preference.

Substitute Training and Guidelines

All substitutes are required to do the following:

Once all the above is complete, call Kathy McCoun at 804-469-4190 to schedule an appointment. Applicants may complete the required paperwork prior to orientation and bring the following documents:

  • Driver’s License/State ID
  • Social Security Card or other valid forms of identity to work in the United States
  • TB test results from doctor or Health Department
  • Voided check (for payroll purposes)

Dinwiddie County Public Schools Human Resources Department provides substitute classes on a regular basis for instructional positions. Applicants are scheduled for a substitute class once the required documentation is provided. We cover the cost of the background checks. Candidates selected for substituting will be notified once all information has been received. We have the right to  delay a start date if results are pending.
