Specialty Schools Admissions Information For SY 26-27
Dinwiddie County Public Schools works hard to support students’ enrollment at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School (ARGS), the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School (MLWGS), and CodeRVA. There is no tuition cost to students who attend these schools. Current eighth grade students who reside in Dinwiddie County, and who will have completed Algebra I before their freshman year of high school, are eligible to apply to the Governor’s Schools. Current eighth grade students who reside in Dinwiddie County, and who have an interest and passion for computer science, may apply to CodeRVA.
Information about each school and the admissions process is available below. Students interested in applying may see their counselor for more information. All schools have transitioned to an online application process this year. Please be patient if we encounter unforeseen technical challenges during this process. Parents are welcome to attend any sessions.
Appomattox Regional Governor’s School
The ARGS is a magnet school for talented and gifted students. It is the only full-time Governor’s School in the Commonwealth dedicated to the arts and technology. Located in the Folly Castle Historic District in Petersburg, it has a population of nearly 400 students from 14 school divisions and creates a diverse, inclusive environment where our students thrive and embrace our motto: “Create. Lead. Inspire. Achieve.” With our unique curriculum coupled with the broad spectrum of academics we offer, ARGS is a place that allows students the creative freedom to explore their passion in the arts and technology. Applications for the Governor’s Schools will be available at this link from October 1, 2025 through December 2, 2025 A detailed application schedule is available here. Students who plan to apply should consult this checklist to ensure they have required information to complete the application process. An informational forum for prospective Dinwiddie Middle School students will take place at ARGS from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on October 17th. Eligible students had an opportunity to attend an informational meeting at Dinwiddie Middle School on September 30, 2025 at 10:30 AM in the auditorium.
Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School
The MLWGS is a nationally ranked magnet school for high achieving students. With a student population of approximately 780 students, it is located in the heart of Richmond and partners with 14 local divisions. The school’s broad-based curriculum provides opportunities for accelerated and enriched learning as well as global citizenship, ethical leadership, and experiential learning. The school’s inclusive school community is a welcoming space for the best and the brightest to grow intellectually and to thrive socio-emotionally. CodeRVA
CodeRVA Regional High School provides an innovative learning environment that uses blended and project-based learning to develop students’ self-management skills while integrating academic content, agile workplace methodologies, and internship experiences that provide a pipeline of critical thinkers prepared to enter college or Richmond’s growing technology sector. CodeRVA students have the opportunity to graduate with a Virginia high school diploma, an associate degree from the Virginia Community College System, industry certifications, and as many as 360 hours of practical information technology work experience.
CodeRVA Regional High School is a public magnet school that serves more than 340 students from fifteen school divisions. Since its founding in 2017, CodeRVA has used blended (online and face-to-face) learning to develop students’ self-management skills while integrating academic content, agile workplace methodologies, and internship experiences to provide a pipeline of critical thinkers prepared to enter college or Richmond’s growing technology sector. An open house for prospective students will take place on October 14, 2025 and December 9th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at CodeRVA. Students will also have an opportunity to attend an informational meeting at Dinwiddie Middle School on October 7, 2025 at 11:15 AM.
