How to use this guide: This chart shows how History and Social Studies courses build on each other from Grade 6 through Grade 12. Placement is based on SOL scores, District Common Assessments, and classroom performance. Work with your child’s School Counselor to review options and build their Academic & Career Plan (ACP).

Dinwiddie Middle School — Grades 6–8

Middle School History Sequence

All students follow the same sequence — follow the arrows ↓

Grade 6
U.S. History I to 1865
Grade 7
Civics & Economics
Students will participate in the Civics & Economics SOL Assessment at the end of this course.
Grade 8
U.S. History II: 1865 to Present

Transition to High School: All students are recommended for the 9th grade sequence based on multiple data factors and course performance from grades 6–8. Students and families should carefully review options with the School Counselor when building the student’s ACP.

High School History & Social Studies Sequence

Three ACP Pathways based on placement — students may move between pathways with demonstrated mastery and teacher/counselor recommendation based on course performance

Diploma Credit Requirement: The Standard Diploma requires 3 credits in History & Social Studies. The Advanced Studies Diploma requires 4 credits. Students pursuing the Advanced Studies Diploma should plan their course sequence carefully with their School Counselor.

Recommended for students with a B or higher in Honors World History and 450+ on the WHI SOL.

SOL Assessments: Students will have the opportunity to earn a verified credit for graduation upon enrolling in any of the following: World History I, World History II, or VA & US History. Once a student has passed a history SOL, no additional SOL participation is required.

Dual Enrollment & Associate Degree: Families interested in earning an Associate Degree through Richard Bland College should review the Dual Enrollment Handbook available on our website under the “Student Advancement” page.
