How to use this guide: This chart shows how English courses build on each other from Grade 6 through Grade 12. Placement is based on SOL scores, District Common Assessments, and classroom performance. Work with your child’s School Counselor to review options and build their Academic & Career Plan (ACP).

SOL Assessments: Students will participate in a Reading assessment in grades 6–8. In 8th grade, students will also participate in an Integrated Reading & Writing SOL assessment.

Transition to High School: All students are recommended for the 9th grade sequence based on multiple data factors and course performance from grades 6–8. Students and families should carefully review options with the School Counselor when building the student’s ACP.
