English 10 emphasizes writing effectively in different modes using figurative and literal language depending on audience, occasion, and purpose. Students define problems, gather information through research, and evaluate problems individually and in groups. Use of language and improvement of skills through the study of basic literary themes and literature from world culture is a focus of this course.

Research and Writing is designed for college-bound students and provides opportunities to learn and develop writing skills in a number of specific writing formats. Emphasis is placed on the writing process and on the requirements of each specific format, including the research paper. Technology is incorporated into the writing process.

English 11 emphasizes the skills of critical reading, speaking, and writing. The study of American literature to gain insight into history and cultures, the study of writers' styles as it relates to meaning, revision of writing to achieve sentence variety, persuasion techniques, and the synthesis of information from multiple sources are all elements of this course.

English 12 requires students to demonstrate skills of oral and written persuasion, to increase their understanding of the range and depth of human experience through the study of literature, to write effective compositions including a documented research paper, and to recognize the process by which language changes.

Creative Writing is designed for the student who already enjoys writing fiction and poetry and wants to develop that skill further. This elective centers around the creative writing process, emphasizing short story, poetry, and dramatic (play) writing. Students put final copies of their work into published form, including reading assignments aloud in class. Projects may include sending finished work to a publisher, creating and editing a literary magazine, and submitting a portfolio to VHSL for evaluation.

Students survey Greek and Roman, Norse, and other significant mythologies. The course emphasizes mythology's role in literature and in the shaping of cultures. Projects include research into myths and their impact on modern language, vocabulary, literature, government, philosophy, drama, and science. Creative writing is also part of this course.

First-year students learn to do basic layouts, write stories and captions for publication, take photographs, and complete work assigned by staff members and the sponsor. Students are strongly encouraged to attend the yearbook workshop during the summer.

Introduces and develops critical thinking and the fundamentals of academic writing. History & Social Science
📋 VDOE History & Social Science SOL ↗Students use skills of historical and geographical analysis to explore the early history of the United States and understand ideas and events that strengthened the union. This course follows U.S. history from pre-Columbian times until 1865. Students learn fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography in chronological sequence, study foundational documents and speeches, and examine everyday life at different times through primary and secondary sources.
Students examine the roles citizens play in the political, governmental, and economic systems in the United States. Students examine the constitutions of Virginia and the United States, identify the rights, duties, and responsibilities of citizens, and describe the structure and operation of government at the local, state, and national levels. Students investigate the process by which decisions are made in the American market economy. Civic education emphasizes the intellectual and practical skills required for responsible citizenship.
Students continue to use skills of historical and geographical analysis as they examine American history since 1865, following U.S. history from the end of the Reconstruction era to the present. Students learn fundamental concepts in civics, economics, and geography within the context of United States history. Political, economic, and social challenges facing the reunited nation are examined chronologically as students develop an understanding of how the American experience shaped the world's political and economic landscape.
Students explore the historical development of people, places, and patterns of life from ancient times until about 1500 A.D. Students study the origins of much of our heritage using texts, maps, pictures, stories, diagrams, charts, and chronological and inquiry skills.

This course covers history and geography from the late Middle Ages (1500 AD) to the present with emphasis on Western Europe. Geographic influences on history continue to be explored, with increasing attention given to political boundaries that developed with the evolution of nation-states. Significant attention is given to the ways scientific and technological revolutions created new economic conditions that produced social and political changes.

Students learn how economies and markets operate and how the United States economy is interconnected with the global economy. Students also learn to navigate financial decisions relating to career exploration, budgeting, banking, credit, insurance, spending, financing postsecondary education, taxes, saving and investing, buying/leasing a vehicle, and living independently. The course incorporates all economics and financial literacy objectives included in the Code of Virginia §22.1-200-03B.
This course encompasses the development of American ideals and institutions through the study of major events, eras, documents, and personalities of Virginia and United States history from the Age of Exploration to the modern era. This course provides a perspective on the relationship between past and contemporary issues.

This course examines the ancient empires of Africa and their contributions to the modern world, the impact of imperialism on the continent's social, environmental, and economic structures, African civil rights leaders and the independence movements they led, and the challenges the continent faces today. The course focuses on the history, culture, arts, and literature of Africans and African-Americans, developing an appreciation for the diversity of intellectual and artistic forms as a prelude to interdisciplinary multicultural activities.

AP Psychology provides an overview of current psychological theory and practice. Students explore the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of humans and other animals, including biological bases of behavior, cognitive and emotional processes, and diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. The course emphasizes scientific method, ethical standards in research, and critical thinking. Student work will be required outside of class time.

This college-level Government & Politics curriculum gives students a critical perspective on politics and government. The course involves the study of general concepts used to interpret politics and the analysis of specific case studies, and requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that make up our political reality. Students examine the four basic governmental institutions (the presidency, the federal courts, Congress, and the bureaucracy) and the processes of government.

This is the most comprehensive study of our nation's history offered at Dinwiddie High School. Students explore in depth the "change over time" which has shaped our country and its institutions, chronologically and thematically. Students master names, dates, events, and legislation, and examine the perspectives of historians through charts, graphs, documents, cartoons, letters, and speeches.

Mathematics
📋 VDOE Mathematics SOL ↗Mathematics 1 prepares students for the study of algebra. Problem solving, proportional reasoning, and mathematical applications are emphasized. Topics include consumer applications, proportional reasoning, and computation with integers. The Extended (1E) version includes the same standards with additional curriculum and enrichment projects for students who demonstrate a strong grasp of 5th grade math concepts.
The seventh-grade standards continue to emphasize the foundations of algebra. Topics include operations with rational numbers, proportional reasoning, volume and surface area, properties of quadrilaterals, probability, and solving linear equations and inequalities. Students explore proportional and non-proportional relationships and the concept of slope as rate of change.

The eighth-grade standards continue to build concepts needed for success in high school algebra, geometry, and statistics. Students explore real numbers, proportional reasoning, volume and surface area of three-dimensional figures, transformations in the coordinate plane, the Pythagorean Theorem, data representation, and linear functions. These standards provide a solid foundation for Algebra I.

Algebra I assists students in generalizing patterns and modeling practical situations with algebraic models. Topics include patterning, proportional reasoning, and representing mathematical relationships using tables, symbols, and graphs. Graphing utilities (calculators, computers, and other technology tools) are used throughout. Students visualize, analyze, and understand algebraic and statistical behaviors.

Trigonometry includes the study of trigonometric definitions, applications, graphing, and solving trigonometric equations and inequalities. Emphasis is placed on connections between right triangle ratios, trigonometric functions, and circular functions. Applications and modeling are included throughout the course.
Through the use of open-source technology tools, students identify and explore problems that involve relational database concepts and data-intensive computing to find solutions and make generalizations. Students engage in a data science problem-solving structure to interact with large data sets: formulating problems, collecting and cleaning data, visualizing data, modeling using data, and communicating data-formulated solutions.

Science
📋 VDOE Science SOL ↗The sixth-grade standards emphasize data analysis and experimentation. Scientific methodology focuses on precision in stating hypotheses and defining variables. The concept of change is explored through the study of transformations of energy and matter. Topics include the role of the sun's energy in Earth's systems, water in the environment, air and atmosphere, basic chemistry, the solar system, space exploration, and natural resource management.
The Life Science standards emphasize a more complex understanding of change, cycles, patterns, and relationships in the living world. Students explore cellular organization and the classification of organisms, dynamic relationships among organisms and ecosystems, and change as a result of genetic transmission. Inquiry skills include organizational and mathematical analysis of data, manipulation of variables, and identification of experimental error.
Physical Science standards stress in-depth understanding of the nature and structure of matter and the characteristics of energy. Major areas include the organization and use of the periodic table; physical and chemical changes; nuclear reactions; temperature and heat; sound; light; electricity and magnetism; and work, force, and motion. Students plan and conduct research involving classroom experimentation and literature reviews.

Students work on activities that model or duplicate processes on Earth. Topics include man's effect on the earth, topographic maps, earth motions, the seasons, the water cycle, the rock cycle, weathering and erosion, mountain building, movement of the earth's crust, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, and geology.
This course includes the study of many components of our environment and the human impact on our planet. Topics focus on scientific inquiry, the physical world, the living environment, resource conservation, humans' impact on the environment, and legal and civic responsibility. Instruction focuses on student data collection and analysis through laboratory experiences and field work.

The Biology standards provide students with a detailed understanding of living systems. Emphasis is placed on examining alternative scientific explanations, conducting controlled experiments, analyzing and communicating information, and gathering and using information in scientific literature. Topics include biochemical life processes, cellular organization, mechanisms of inheritance, dynamic relationships among organisms, and the change in organisms through time, including ecology, evolution, genetics, and taxonomy.

The course stresses information essential to students planning to enter any healthcare-related position, focusing on human anatomy and physiology along with related medical conditions. Astronomy is the study of space, including the Big Bang theory and the origin and evolution of stars, star systems, and galaxies. Topics include the position of Earth in the solar system; sun-Earth-moon relationships (seasons, tides, eclipses); characteristics of the sun, planets and their moons, comets, meteors, and asteroids; and the history and contributions of space exploration.

The Chemistry standards provide students with a detailed understanding of the interaction of matter and energy through laboratory techniques, manipulation of chemical quantities, and problem-solving applications. Scientific methodology is employed in experimental and analytical investigations. Concepts are illustrated with current practical applications including environmental, nuclear, organic, and biochemistry content areas.

Topics include interrelationships of plants and animals; plant morphology; biome comparisons; oceans including the Chesapeake Bay; conservation and management practices for forests, soil, wildlife, and water; land use management; and current ecological issues. This course focuses on the structure and function of genes, chromosomes, and genomes; biological variation resulting from recombination, mutation, and selection; population genetics; use of genetic methods to analyze protein function; gene regulation; and inherited disease.
Oceanography is the study of water of the ocean, the life within it, and the solid Earth beneath it. The course examines ocean currents, tides, marine life, ocean chemistry, wave formation, plate tectonics, atmospheric conditions, and human effects on the ocean. Students participate in labs, discussions, and class activities centered on ocean issues such as pollution, water chemistry, and marine organisms.

BIO 101 focuses on foundations in cellular structure, metabolism, and genetics in an evolutionary context. Both courses emphasize the process of science, an interdisciplinary approach, and the relevance of biology to society.
World Languages

Students develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. After learning basics such as the alphabet, numbers, and rules of capitalization and punctuation, students use the language in everyday situations such as telling time, giving dates, stating needs and wants, talking about school and classes, and describing people and things. Lessons are presented in specific locations around the Spanish-speaking world so students develop an overview of the history, geography, art, music, and customs of the people whose language they are studying.

Students continue refining skills by identifying and describing family members, discussing family activities, making plans, extending and accepting invitations, ordering meals in a restaurant, and describing moods and physical conditions. Students use more complex grammatical structures including object pronouns and the preterite tense, and become more knowledgeable about transportation, meals, shopping, fashion, sports, festivities, and the family's role in Spanish-speaking countries.

Latin courses develop students' reading ability in the Latin language while exploring ancient Roman history, culture, and mythology. Knowledge of Latin strengthens students' understanding of English vocabulary, grammar, and the foundations of Romance languages.
Theatre Arts
📋 VDOE Fine Arts SOL ↗- Requirement:
- Must see one DHS production as a test grade. Students must audition for the next level.
Students learn the basics of performance and the theatre world, including acting fundamentals, performance techniques, and an introduction to the elements of theatrical production.

- Must assist with tech week as a major test grade; must be able to stay after one day to help; must see one DHS performance as a test grade.
Stagecraft includes performance as well as scenery work. Intermediate Acting and Playwriting includes acting methods and producing pieces for children's camp as well as student showcases. Students must audition for the next level.
This course provides students with a critical understanding of film through the discussion and viewing of motion pictures, with emphasis upon the study of film history and the forms and functions of film. Students develop skills to analyze the shared social, cultural, and historical influences of films and their contexts.
In Video Production (Film Production), students are exposed to the basics of cinema by learning how to make and market their own films. From scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, and directing, students utilize the tools needed to tell compelling stories through film.

Students learn the basics of operating booth equipment and use that knowledge to direct a performance. Students teach their own lessons based on their area of interest within theatre arts.

- Designed for first-time instrument players. Students must acquire their own instrument. Two performances required (one per semester). Instruments offered to beginners: flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, baritone, and trombone.
Students learn basic instrumental skill development and music reading. The primary focus is foundational technique on a wind instrument of the student's choice.

Auto Tech II covers the advanced competencies from the NATEF Maintenance and Light Repair accredited program. Successful completion results in program completion and prepares students to pass the equivalent NATEF student exam and ultimately attain certification.

Carpentry I is the building block for achieving high-level construction industry skills. With an emphasis on safety, students are taught to use hand and power tools, cut stock, apply construction mathematics, and interpret blueprints. Students identify types of residential construction components to form foundations and frame walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, doors, and windows. All students obtain the OSHA 10 safety credential. Carpentry II leads to successful transition into postsecondary education or careers in carpentry and related fields. Students become proficient in assembling and installing residential construction components current with industry standards. Successfully passing Carpentry II leads to CTE program completion.
Collision Repair I teaches non-structural analysis, damage repair, and welding. Students work with a variety of materials using metal finishing and body filling techniques to prepare surfaces and repair panels. Collision Repair II teaches students to repair, mask, and refinish auto body components and entire vehicles using spray guns and personal safety equipment. Students who successfully complete this program sequence will be prepared to take the ASE/NATEF exam and are ready for postsecondary education opportunities.
Cosmetology I introduces students to the study of hair, skin, and nails and their related care. Students are grounded in theory and practice procedures using manikins for manipulative skill practice. The first-year course emphasizes personal safety, professionalism, sanitation and disinfection, shampooing and conditioning, and styling and cutting hair. Cosmetology II builds on the theoretical foundation to increase proficiency in hair cutting and styling on live models, trains students in safe chemical processes, and introduces a business management unit with a focus on managing the salon.

Electricity I develops skills in the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of residential, commercial, and industrial electrical systems. Students study electrical theory, navigate the National Electrical Code Book, select and install conductors, and work with panelboards, switchboards, and generators. Electricity II continues skill development and adds mathematical problems related to electricity, advanced lighting, communication, power systems, conduit and raceways, panelboards, switchboards, grounding systems, and generators.

The third year of the Electricity sequence. Students continue advanced training in commercial and industrial electrical systems, building on the competencies earned in Electricity I and II.

Masonry I develops basic skills in using hand and power tools, as well as machinery and equipment, related to brick and block masonry construction. Students focus on problem-solving and employability skills while performing entry-level brick masonry tasks. Masonry II further refines and expands skills in constructing masonry wall systems typical of the 21st century. Students may have the opportunity to experience work-based learning.

- Upon completion, students are eligible to take the Virginia Nurse Aide certification exam. Individuals must be 18 years of age and have a high school diploma before applying for licensure.
Students earn credentials in nursing assistant care, patient care, and medication aide skills at Rowanty Technical Center. The program emphasizes the study of nursing occupations, covering normal growth and development, basic body structure and function, medical terminology, and elementary patient care skills, with on-the-job instruction in a licensed healthcare setting as part of the course.
Welding I students are taught to use manual welding, cutting, and electrical arc welding processes to fabricate and join metal parts according to diagrams, blueprints, and specifications. Students learn all safety-related practices and techniques, including earning the OSHA 10 card. Welding II teaches advanced students how to perform welds in various positions using multiple welding processes, including gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) pipe tests. Students are prepared to earn relevant industry credentials toward employment in production or manufacturing.
