Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr. directs the division’s Special Education program. He supervises a support staff of social workers, psychologists, and therapists who assist our special education population. The Child Study process, evaluation for services, development of Individualized Education Plans (IEP) and their implementation all fall under Dr. Gurley’s department. He also closely monitors the division’s compliance with complex federal and state statutes and is the Homebound Services Coordinator.
Dr. Gurley is assisted by Special Education Coordinator, Pamela Fields who supervises Elementary Special Education which includes Early Childhood Special Education, Bright Stars (4 year old at-risk program), and Child Find. In addition, Ms. Fields oversees the speech pathologists and educational diagnosticians in an effort to better serve our student’s needs.
Parents who would like their child tested for special education services should contact their child’s guidance counselor. Any other questions or concerns about the Dinwiddie County Special Education Program can be directed to Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr. or his assistant, Mrs. Kathy McCoun, at (804) 469-4389.
